GENERAL
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Forensic scientist assigned to the
Division of Criminal Investigation, Crime Laboratory, located in Cheyenne,
Wyoming; at the entry level, responsible (or in training) for forensic
examination of all types of trace evidence; perform duties in collecting,
examining, analyzing and comparing trace evidence, assisting both in lab work
and crime scene investigation; prepare reports of examination results for law
enforcement personnel and prosecuting attorneys; provide testimony as an expert
witness in legal proceedings; conduct informal training to law enforcement
personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under
supervision, performs forensic examination of all types of trace evidence
including hairs, fibers, glass, paint and gun shot residue submitted to the
Wyoming State Crime Laboratory by law enforcement agencies through the State of
Wyoming; responsible for collecting, examining, analyzing and comparing evidence
both in the crime lab and at crime scenes; prepare detailed reports summarizing
examination findings for law enforcement personnel and prosecuting attorneys;
may be called on to testify as an expert witness in a criminal trial; conduct
informal training to law enforcement personnel; maintain crime lab instruments
and coordinate supply procurement for the trace unit evidence group; develop
and maintain a working knowledge of criminal law, and state policies and
procedures; continually update level of expertise at attending training courses
and continuing education courses to maintain proficiency certifications;
maintain sound working knowledge of new techniques concerning the science of
firearms and tool marks; other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge
of policies, procedures and standards of laboratory practices; knowledge of
laboratory testing procedures and techniques; knowledge of equipment and supplies used in a laboratory; knowledge of
proper procedures and standard safety precautions in a laboratory environment;
knowledge of laboratory terminology and techniques including safety; knowledge
of the use of analytical balances, pH meters, basic microscopes and computers;
knowledge of data entry codes used in the laboratory. Skill in carrying out a variety of laboratory
tests as described; skill in the use of computers and cameras; skill in
gathering and preserving crime scene evidence samples; skill in finding and
identifying essential information; skill in use of extensive users manuals;
skill in using logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of
different approaches; skill in work organization and the ability to work
independently; skill in learning to use and understand the operational methods
and techniques of laboratory material and equipment; skill in learning evidence
collection and records maintenance techniques; skill in learning federal, state
and local laws, codes and regulations pertaining to a forensic laboratory;
skill in learning policies, procedures, rules and regulations governing a
forensic laboratory; skill in maintaining accurate and complete records; skill
in communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; skill in
establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with hose
contacted in the course of work; skill in completing tasks in a timely manner
with minimum supervision; skill in explaining procedures and results in area of
expertise to a lay person in understandable terms; skill in handling
multi-tasks efficiently and accurately; skill in using tools associated with
the position; skill in handling stressful situations and make appropriate
decisions; skill in maintaining confidentiality is all aspects of work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience
equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, biology or other
closely related field.
NOTE: Preference will be given to those with professional work
experience in a forensic laboratory setting; must have a valid driver’s license
and pass an extensive background investigation; must adhere to physical fitness
standards to perform field work associated with crime scene processing and
laboratory work; some overtime work may be required.
