DNA Examiner

The Scottsdale Police Department Crime Laboratory is seeking a

qualified applicant for a full time position in the DNA Unit. The successful

applicant will be required to perform the duties of a DNA examiner as defined by

section 5.3 of the Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA and Convicted

Offender DNA Databasing Laboratories.

Qualifications

Criminalist III/DNA Examiner – A minimum of 7 years of

forensic laboratory experience as a Criminalist in a recognized laboratory

actively engaged in forensic science of which 5 years must be experience as a

DNA analyst performing casework, issuing examination reports and testifying in

court as an expert witness in DNA analysis. Experience with screening forensic

evidence for biological stains and trace evidence and DNA profile interpretation

with statistical analysis. A Bachelors degree, graduate degree or its equivalent

in a biology, chemistry or forensic science related area and college coursework

covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and

training in population genetics or statistics. At least 12 credit hours or

equivalent that cover these subject areas are required. Statistical training may

be satisfied through internal or external training or a college course.

Demonstration of educational course requirements must be demonstrated through

college transcripts and/or training records.

Responsibilities

Catalog, collect, preserve and maintain evidence in a forensic

laboratory. Perform body fluid identification using microscopic, color and

immunological presumptive and confirmatory tests. Isolate, purify and quantitate

DNA from all forms of evidence. Develop genetic profiles using current accepted

methodology. Interpret data and prepare written technical reports. Review

casework from other DNA examiners for accuracy and compliance with mandatory

standards. Enter forensic unknown profiles into the CODIS system and perform

statistical analysis on inclusion samples. Provide courtroom testimony when

required. Provide training to Department personnel and external agencies.

Participate in external proficiency testing in serology/DNA biannually. Comply

with ASCLD/LAB accreditation standards and maintain requirements set forth by

the FBI Quality Assurance document. Communicate clearly and cooperatively with

laboratory personnel, attorneys, officers and other Department staff. Ability to

organize and self task work assignments.

Preferred Experience

Experience with Applied Biosystems 310 genetic analyzer, 9700

thermocyclers, 7000 sequence detection systems using GeneScan and GeneMapper ID

v. 3.2 software. Experience with the Identifier and Yfiler commercial kits from

Applied Biosystems. Experience with screening evidence for the presence or

absence of biological stains using serological methods and collecting contact or

touch DNA evidence. Experience with hair identification as related to nuclear

DNA analysis and experience with low yield DNA samples. Auditing experience and

experience in an ASCLD/LAB accredited laboratory. Validation experience in a

forensic DNA laboratory. Experience with CODIS and POPSTATS.
