Job Opportunity – DNA Technical Leader
THE JOB:
Expressions of interest are invited from suitably qualified
candidates for the position of DNA Technical Leader. This is a new position arising out of the growth in demand
for NFSTC quality support services. Candidates
must be able to demonstrate that they can provide leadership in the development
and implementation of NFSTC’s programs.
The programs provide a job of considerable variety.
The Technical Leader will be involved in all of them, but will have
support from other NFSTC staff and contractors. The main programs are listed
below but there are others which are either not a significant demand on time or
are currently under development.
DNA audits:
The audits are mainly directed to private sector laboratories seeking
confirmation of compliance with national QA standards.
Some public laboratories also seek the benefit of this service, either to
provide their external audit or because they are not yet ASCLD/LAB accredited
but wish some objective evaluation of compliance.
This work requires a sound knowledge of the national QA standards, a high
degree of attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal skills in dealing
with the client laboratories. The person appointed will need to be able to:
Assist
Registrar with technical planning and identifying technical assessors |

Act
as Lead Assessor |
|
Review
audit reports and corrective actions |
DNA analysis:
The laboratory testing is related to NFSTC’s programs providing
certified reference samples and other materials that can be used for a range of
quality assurance purposes. These
are part of our cooperative agreement with NIJ.
This work requires sound knowledge of established practices and new
developments in DNA analysis. It
also requires technical skills of the very highest standard.
The person appointed will be responsible for:
Support
to the Director of Scientific Services in the design and specification of DNA reference standards and other forensic biology samples |

The
QC and certification of forensic biology reference materials |
|
Operation
and maintenance of the DNA laboratory instrumentation including capillary electrophoresis platforms |
DNA training:
The demand for training in DNA remains high and NFSTC will continue to
develop and offer a range of programs to scientists and attorneys.
The person appointed will need to be able to:
Interact
with scientific and lay clients to identify their training needs |

Develop
solutions including, identification of suitable contractor consultants and development of lesson plans for in-house courses |

Provide
theoretical and practical training |
|
Work
with other NFSTC staff to develop computer-based solutions to training needs |
THE JOB CONDITIONS:
Education and experience
The person appointed will meet DAB Technical Leader
education and experience requirements.
Salary and conditions
This is a full time position located at NFSTC’s facility
in Largo, FL.
Salary will depend on qualifications and experience, but it
is expected to be in the range of $50 to $80K.

An early starting date is sought.
