CRIMINALIST I/II – DNA ANALYSIS 

Starting Annual Salary for Criminalist I: $51,640 

Starting Annual Salary for Criminalist II: $57,000 – $69,349 DOE

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) will be accepting

LVMPD BENEFITS: The LVMPD offers excellent benefits in addition to the annual

salary stated above: 3 weeks annual vacation; 8.67 days of annual sick leave; 3

bonus days per year if less than 3 days of sick leave are used; 5 days of

bereavement leave deducted from sick leave for immediate family; 12 paid

holidays per year; two personal holiday per year; holiday compensation for

working a holiday at straight time pay or additional annual leave; working hours

consist of nine-hour shift with a 3-day weekend every other week or traditional

five-day/eight-hour shift; overtime pay at a rate of one and one half (1 ½)

times the gross hourly rate or compensatory time; longevity pay at the end of 10

consecutive years of employment beginning at 2 1/2% of base salary with an

additional 1/2% each year until a maximum of 15%; direct deposit of paychecks is

available; employees are covered under the State of Nevada Public Employees

Retirement System (PERS) at no cost to them and are vested with 5 years in the

retirement system; Nevada has no state income tax and employees do not pay

social security taxes; employees will have 1.45% of their salary deducted for

Medicare and this amount is matched by LVMPD; deferred compensation plan is

available; employees may purchase up to 2 US Savings Bonds (Series EE) per

paycheck; Police Employee Assistance Program is a counseling and referral

service for employees and their families available at no cost to employees;

Cancer, Intensive Care, and Flex Plans are available to employees through AFLAC;

health, vision, and dental insurance is available for employees and their

dependents beginning at date of hire. Single coverage begins at $3.91 per

paycheck and family begins at $84.23 per paycheck depending on the plan. The

plans include coverage for major medical, hospital, surgical, dental and vision,

as well as life and accidental death, at provider locations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or

university with major course work in criminalistics, forensic science,

chemistry, biology, or a related field; must meet the education requirements for

analyst, as established in The Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA

Testing Laboratories and Convicted Offender DNA Databasing Laboratories Issued

by the FBI Director.

DUTIES: To perform a variety of scientific laboratory analyses on physical

evidence in the DNA specialty area; to provide scientific consultation; to

interpret test results and form conslusions; to prepare reports; and to testify

as an expert witness

BEST CANDIDATE WILL: will meet the educational and experience standards for

analyst or technical leader as established in The Quality Assurance Standards

for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories and Convicted Offender DNA Databasing

Laboratories Issued by the FBI Director. The best candidate will also have more

than three years of work experience and proficiency in the specialty area of DNA

analysis, specifically in STR analysis using an ABI platform (310 and/or 3100);

experience in the analysis of casework samples to include the evaluation,

screening, extraction and analysis of a variety of evidentiary substrates and

biological sources; rendered expert testimony in relation to DNA analysis;

knowledge of computer hardware and software used in a DNA laboratory to include

ABI GeneMapper ID; knowledge of policies, procedures and regulations governing a

forensic DNA lab as defined in the FBI Quality Assurance Audit for Forensic DNA

Testing Laboratories and Convicted Offender DNA Databasing Laboratories

Document; familiarity with the ASCLD/LAB accreditation program; knowledge of

standard sources of information and current literature in the field of forensic

DNA analysis; experience in preparing evidence and exhibits for presentation in

court; experience in providing training to law enforcement personnel and

attorneys.
