Forensic Biologist II positions. The successful candidates will perform
independent case analysis, including DNA typing of biological materials using
standard protocols. Works closely with unit supervisor and other laboratory
staff in the processing and analysis of evidentiary materials from
investigations of assaults, homicides, and other crimes. Reviews and interprets results of detailed
analytical procedures and prepares official reports of analysis results and
offers expert opinion of test results. Consults with and advises police
investigators and lawyers regarding analysis.
Provides expert witness court testimony regarding testing methods, testing
results, validity of testing procedures, and the evidentiary value of the
results in criminal and civil proceedings.
Participates in the development, validation, and implementation of new
analytical techniques and methods and makes recommendations to the unit
supervisor regarding improvements in procedures. Performs quality control procedures and
maintains accurate records related to quality control management. Assists with
training technical staff. Participates
in the proper storage and tracking of evidence. Performs other duties as
assigned.
Requirements
include a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, Forensic Sciences,
or in a job related field of study with subjects providing a basic
understanding of forensic DNA analysis. One (1) year of job related experience.
Knowledge of the principles of animal and/or human genetics and the common
techniques of DNA analysis as they relate to forensic DNA analysis and evidence
handling procedures. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
Working knowledge of personal computers and standard applications. Ability to
communicate in a concise and effective manner, work cooperatively with
effective time management skills, and perform assigned tasks with minimal
supervision. Must pass pre-employment background check. Work is performed in a
laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical
hazard. Must possess manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to
accurately execute standard protocols. Moderate lifting up to

Quality Manager

Quality Manager. The successful candidates will administer all aspects of
quality compliance monitoring. Monitors department
and laboratory practices to verify continuing compliance with the American
Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/
Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) standards, and department policies and
procedures. Ensures the validation of new
technical procedures. Investigates technical problems, proposes
remedial actions, and verifies their implementation. Identifies
non-compliance issues. Proposes
corrections and improvements in the quality system. Assesses the adequacy of report review activities. Recommends training to improve the quality of staff. Evaluates instrument calibration and maintenance records.
Administers proficiency testing program, evaluates results, and reports
findings. Maintains medical and scientific staff credential
records, training records, court testimony, and ensures records comply with
standards. Administers annual quality audit:
Selects, trains and evaluates internal auditors. Schedules
and coordinates quality system audits Prepares and maintains Quality
Manual. Monitors accreditation standards,
statutory provisions, and regulatory matters to ensure compliance.
Reviews quality management literature and outside programs.
Serves as the primary liaison between the department and accreditation agencies
and coordinates departmental quality meetings. Performs other
duties as assigned.
Requirements
include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in
Chemistry, Physical or Natural Sciences, Forensic Sciences, Criminalistics, or
closely related field. Five (5) years of work experience in forensic science.
Experience must include analysis, supervision and/or administration in an
ASCLD/LAB accredited forensic laboratory. Experience as a testifying forensic
expert, forensic laboratory quality manager, and ASCLD/LAB inspector is
preferred. Must pass criminal background investigation.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid
driver license. Knowledge of principles, technical protocols of forensic
laboratory analysis, forensic pathology protocols, applicable accreditation
standards, relevant quality assurance and quality control protocols, chemical
and biological safe handling procedures, and established evidence handling
procedures. Skill to effectively communicate both orally and
in writing and utilize personal computers using standard applications.
Ability to evaluate scientific tests, protocols and results for accuracy,
precision and compliance with standards; conduct investigations impartially and
with integrity; operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory instrumentation;
work cooperatively with others; and establish work priorities and work with
minimal supervision. Primary work is in a laboratory environment. Routinely required to work in areas with materials that involve
potential exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards. Required to use good laboratory practices and safety precautions
including the use of personal protective equipment. Must
possess manual dexterity, physical mobility and visual and hearing acuity
sufficient to perform essential job functions, to include the accurate

Drug Chemist II. The successful candidate will analyze forensic specimens
submitted by law enforcement personnel, forensic pathologists and other
submitters to determine the presence and quantity of suspected controlled
substances; selects specimen for testing; performs calculations; evaluates,
interprets and reports findings; testifies as required. Maintains, calibrates,
troubleshoots and repairs specialized laboratory instrumentation; maintains
familiarity with instrumentation theory and operation; assesses instrument
performance and specimen results to facilitate maintenance and repair
activities. Prepares reagents and standards; maintains adequate level of
supplies and parts. Participates in Quality Management Program; performs
analyses in accordance with standard operating procedures; works in a manner
consistent with current applicable accreditation and Laboratory standards.
Follows good laboratory practice; participates in the Institute Environmental,
Health, and Safety and Security Programs. Assists in the validation of new
analytical procedures; remains current in technical knowledge; participates in

of casework. Oversees laboratory testing, analysis, training, and non-routine

applicable disciplines. Designs, develops, validates, and implements new
analytical methods and quality control/quality assurance programs; monitors
laboratory services; maintains industry standards as specified by ASCLD/LAB and
NAME. Maintains care, custody and control of evidence to ensure integrity for
courtroom purposes; performs analytical testing; and defends analytical
methodology and interpretation of results in legal proceedings. Provides consultation and interpretation to medical examiners,
district attorneys, law enforcement officials and others in forensic chemistry.
Fulfills various academic responsibilities including
scientific research and publication, teaching, and lectures. Performs other duties as assigned.
Ph.D. in
physical sciences, biology, chemistry, forensic science or in a job related

Certification by American Board of Forensic Toxicology preferred. Must be
