Job Title:  Trace Evidence Examiner (2 positions)

is currently recruiting for
a Trace Evidence Examiner.  The
successful candidate will conduct a variety of independent chemical and
physical analyses, classifications, and identifications on physical evidence,
with emphasis and expertise in one or more of the following technical
specialties or other state-of-the-art trace evidence analytical technologies:
arson examinations, explosives analysis, primer residue examinations, gunshot
residue analysis, fracture match, hair comparisons, fiber identifications and
comparison, paint analysis and comparison, glass analysis and comparison, crime
scene search and assessment, and general unknowns: · Operates specialized and
computerized instrumentation such as gas chromatograph, mass spectrometer,
flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometer, infra-red spectrophotometer, micro
spectrophotometer, thermal cycler, genetic analyzer, etc.; Performs chemical
and physical analytical procedures using established analytical techniques; ·
Reviews instrument function and analytical results for accuracy and
appropriateness; performs required calculations; · Maintains detailed records
of all work sufficient to verify that the work product and the conclusion meet established
scientific and legal requirements, including quality control requirements; ·
Prepares charge sheets or other materials required to track and/or invoice for
services provided. Reviews and interprets analytical and instrumental results
and produces a detailed, written opinion reports of findings and conclusions
for use by the submitting agency and other interested parties. Testifies in
legal proceedings regarding evidence handling procedures, testing methods,
results and validity of testing protocols. Performs quality control procedures
and maintains accurate records related to quality control management Provides
scientific consultation services to submitters and other interested parties and
offers recommendations for relevant analyses on submitted items. Participates
in the proper receipt, storage and tracking of evidentiary materials. Performs
general laboratory duties, including oversight of staff and training of new
staff. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements
include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in
Chemistry, Physical or Natural Sciences with a strong chemistry background, or
in a job related field of study. One (1) year of work related experience. Must
possess thorough, current knowledge of principles, techniques and procedures of
forensic sciences sub-specialty area; ability to operate and maintain
sophisticated laboratory instrumentation; skilled in the use of standard
laboratory equipment; thorough knowledge in chemical and biological safe
handling procedures; detailed understanding of established evidence handling
procedures; working knowledge of personal computers and standard applications;
ability to communicate in a concise and effective manner; ability to
communicate scientific information to lay persons in an understandable manner;
ability to work cooperatively with others; and the ability to establish work
priorities and work with minimal supervision. Must possess a valid Texas
driver’s license, with a good driving record. Must pass an extensive background
investigation. Performs work in a laboratory environment, although crime scene
search and assessment will involve a variety of environmental conditions;
routinely required to work in areas with potential exposure to biological
and/or chemical hazards; required to use good laboratory practices and safety
precautions including the use of personal protective equipment. Must possess
manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to accurately execute standard
protocols; moderate lifting may be required; frequent and often unanticipated
travel within the state of Texas
