CRIMINALIST I (DNA Unit)
ANNUAL SALARY $42,121 – $68,612 (UNR1/ Grade 107)
HOURS Monday through Friday, Daytime hours
NATURE OF WORK
Under direct supervision in the DNA Unit, the purpose of this position is to
prepare and analyze chemical and evidentiary samples in criminal identification
and investigations in the Crime Laboratory of the Sheriff’s Office. Employees in
this classification function in an entry level capacity and perform specialized
technical and scientific work in the application of basic to moderately complex
laboratory techniques. Position may be responsible for the formal reporting of
and testifying to the findings of such analysis. Performs related work as
directed. Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary
to light work which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling
of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve
extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Tasks are performed in a
laboratory/forensics analysis environment where proper provisions are in place
in terms of employee security and protection. Due to the nature and location of
the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to
disagreeable elements consistent with routine conditions in a
laboratory/forensics analysis environment.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences.
2. One (1) year of laboratory experience preferred. DNA fingerprinting and PCR
related DNA testing experience is preferred. Experience with Applied Biosystems
310, 3100 or 377 is preferred. Such experience must be clearly stated on initial
application.
3. Qualified applicants must have college level credit in genetics,
biochemistry, statistics, organic chemistry (two semesters) and molecular
biology (molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology). Advanced course work
in population genetics, molecular biology, genetics, or related field is
preferred. College transcripts are required at time of application.
