TRACE EVIDENCE SECTION EXAMINER – U.S. ARMY CRIME

LABORATORY

Position:

Chemist, GS-1320-7/9/11/12/13 trainee positions with full performance to GS-13

level.

Salary Range: $29,539 – $81,009

Duties:

The full performance employee serves as a chemist assigned to the Trace Evidence

Division of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL).

The incumbent performs developmental assignment under closer than normal

supervision until the full performance level is reached. All major duties and

responsibilities are identical to those described in the target position. At the

GS-13: full performance level. Independently examines for the purpose of

identifying quantifying, and/or comparing irreplaceable evidence that because of

its paucity, uniqueness, obscurity, transient nature, contamination,

decomposition, or complexity requires the most difficult analyses and/or

complicated interpretations. Interprets and evaluates the results of the

examinations performed and prepares formal, comprehensive laboratory reports of

analyses which, based on the results, are suitable for use in legal proceedings.

Testifies worldwide as an expert witness for various case being worked on.

Qualifications: 

GS-13:

1. Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree

physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering; and 2. One year specialized

experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal Service; or 3.

Combination of education and experience courses equivalent to one of the majors

cited in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 

GS-12:

1. Same as # 1 in the GS-13; and 2. One year specialized experience equivalent

to the GS-11 level in the Federal Service; or 3. Combination of education and

experience courses equivalent to one of the majors cited in 1 above, plus

appropriate experience or additional education. 

GS-11:

1. Same as # 1 in the GS-13; and 2. One year specialized experience equivalent

to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as

experience in investigating, analyzing and interpreting the composition,

molecular structure and properties of substances, the transformations they

undergo, and the amounts of matter and energy included in these transformations;

or 3. Combination of education and experience courses equivalent of the majors

cited in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education; or 4.

Three years of progressively higher level graduated education leading to a Ph.D

degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree. 

GS-09:

1. Same as # 1 in the GS-13; and 2. One year specialized experience equivalent

to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as

experience in investigating, analyzingand

interpreting the composition, molecular structure and properties of substances,

the transformations they undergo, and the amounts of matter and energy included

in these transformations; or 3. Combination of education and experience courses

equivalent of the majors cited in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or

additional education; or 4. Two years of progressively higher level graduated

education leading to a masters degree or masters or equivalent doctoral

degree. 

GS-07:

1. Same as # 1 in the GS-13; and 2. One year specialized experience equivalent

to the GS-05 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as

experience in investigating, analyzing and interpreting the composition,

molecular structure and properties of substances, the transformations they

undergo, and the amounts of matter and energy included in these transformations;

or 3. Combination of education and experience courses equivalent of the majors

cited in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education; or 4. One

year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.
