GENERAL
DESCRIPTION OF
supervision responsible (or in training) for forensic examination of all types of
solid dosage drugs for the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, Crime
Laboratory; analysis including identification, quantitative analysis, and
optical purity; performs duties in examining or investigating physical and
chemical analysis of evidence, assisting both in lab work and crime scene
investigation, and in Clandestine Laboratory Investigation; reports of
examination results are prepared for law enforcement personnel and prosecuting
attorneys; provides testimony as an expert witness in legal proceedings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under supervision performs forensic
examination of all types of solid dosage drugs; analysis includes
identification, quantitative analysis, and optical purity; chemical analysis on
physical evidence in the crime lab and at crime scenes; collects physical
evidence from crime scenes and returns it to the crime lab for evaluation;
prepares detailed reports summarizing examination findings for law enforcement
personnel and prosecuting attorneys; may be called on to testify as an expert
witness in a criminal trial; acts as a resource of information for laboratory
and/or law enforcement personnel;
develops and maintains a working knowledge of the division and state policies
and procedures, criminal law and justice system; continually updates level of
expertise by attending training courses and continuing education courses to
maintain proficiency certifications; other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE
application of chemistry and mathematics as they relate to the modern
laboratory techniques, practices and procedures used in a forensic laboratory;
knowledge of forensic laboratory technique analysis and applications; knowledge
of methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in forensic chemistry and
their applications and limitations; knowledge of research or investigative
techniques and controls which limit or expand the significance of the findings;
knowledge of the impact of work and testing performed in compliance with accreditation
and state/federal regulations; knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, with
emphasis on those procedures associated with the handling of biohazardous
materials; knowledge of division policies and procedures and division goals and
objectives; knowledge of criminal law.
Skill in interpersonal relations; skill in forensic chemistry laboratory
techniques; skill in explaining scientific procedures and results to a lay
person in understandable terms; skill in operating laboratory equipment and
other related chemicals and equipment; skill in recording and maintaining
detailed records; skill in understanding and carrying out oral and written
instructions ; skill in exhibiting a great deal of common sense as needed to
handle high stress situations and make appropriate decisions; skill in
maintaining confidentiality in all aspects of work; skill in maintaining good
rapport with criminal justice personnel and fellow employees; skill in
performing tasks without supervision; skill in working work with others to
achieve common goals; skill in traveling in all weather conditions; skill in
working crime scenes which could involve climbing, crawling, squatting,
laying.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a
bachelor’s degree in a physical science, natural science, forensic science,
chemistry, criminalistics, criminal justice, police science, industrial
technology, engineering or other closely related field. Some positions may
require POST certification
NOTE:
Preference will be given to candidates with chemistry degrees. Successful applicants are required to have a
valid driver’s license, pass an extensive background investigation, and adhere
to physical fitness standards in relation to the ability to perform field work
associated with crime scene processing and laboratory work.
