Salary:

Starting salary will be between

$43,764 and $61,805 per year depending on qualifications, plus excellent

benefits. A twelve-month probationary period will be required. Schedule/Range

15-03. (The contract that covers these positions is currently under

negotiation. The starting salary may be adjusted upon implementation of the

new contract.)

Special Qualifications:

A four-year BA or BS degree in

biology, chemistry or forensic-related area. Also must have satisfactorily

completed coursework in Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biochemistry.

Successful completion of a Statistics course or Statistics workshop is also

required.

We

currently have two full-time DNA

Analyst – Senior level vacancies within our Madison Crime

Laboratory and one half-time DNA Analyst

– Senior level vacancy within our Milwaukee Crime Laboratory.   The

results of this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies in our

Madison and Milwaukee Crime Laboratories within the next six to twelve

months. This recruitment is directed toward journey level forensic

scientists.  Positions at this level perform highly specialized and

scientific forensic testing that involves the examination of physical

evidence related to criminal offenses.

Our

Department’s Crime Laboratory System is accredited by the American Society of

Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board and strives to

provide the criminal justice system with the highest quality technical

assistance in the investigation of criminal matters.  This technical

assistance involves the recognition, recovery, packaging, marking, sealing

and analyses of physical evidence, preparation of technical reports of the

analyses, and competent court testimony.  Laboratory staff also provides

training of law enforcement officers in advanced evidence handling procedures

and the processing of some crime scenes.  Our laboratory system is

determined to maintain technical proficiency in current scientific methods

and to use new technology to improve the quality of forensic work.

Job

Duties:   Independently perform complex examinations

of evidence, including blood and bloodstains, body fluids, and stains of body

fluids, hair and any other items needing DNA or

related analyses.  Perform forensic DNA and

biochemical tests for the identification and characterization of blood and

other bodily fluids, both as liquid and stains.  The characterization of

these evidence types includes DNA

analysis using Short Tandem Repeats (STR). 

Perform visual comparisons of hairs.  Compare evidence from victims,

scenes, or instruments of crimes in order to associate or dissociate the

questioned evidence with the crime.  Perform DNA,

chemical, immunological, microscopic, and instrumental analyses. 

Typical methods used include:  Real Time PCR, Capillary

Electrophoresis, and Robotic analysis.  Prepare written reports of

findings; perform quality assurance; and, present oral testimony in court.

Special

Notes:   Well qualified applicants will have at least

three full-time years of current forensic DNA

experience in a crime laboratory setting and a four-year BA or BS degree in

biology, chemistry or forensic-related area.

 

Applicants

must also be legally entitled to work in the United

States at the time of

application (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a

lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S.) and

must be fluent in technical English. 

 

Applicants

will also be required to successfully complete a thorough background check

prior to appointment.

Job

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Journey level experience

in forensic DNA analyses;

knowledge of forensic analyses methods and techniques; knowledge of the

operation of equipment such as capillary electrophoresis or

sequencing; ability to testify in a court of law as an expert

witness in DNA

analyses; written and oral communication skills.
