DNA RESEARCH COORDINATOR
The Illinois State Police,
Division of Forensic Services, Forensic Sciences Command, is seeking applicants
for the
the Research and Development Laboratory located in
DUTIES: Designs and supervises studies to evaluate
DNA methods; performs applied research to optimize and implement DNA analysis
in casework; develops DNA procedures for use in the analysis of forensic
evidence; and evaluates new equipment and emerging technology in DNA analysis
methods. Assists with the implementation
and integration of DNA technology to DNA analysts at the operational
laboratories; provides technical training to laboratory staff in DNA analysis
methods. Develops and maintains the
ability to perform DNA analysis on cases; appears as an expert witness in court
cases; provides interpretation and opinion testimony on the admissibility of
DNA analysis in casework. Arranges and
participates in collaborative studies; attends and participates in regional and
scientific conferences and/or seminars for the purpose of exchanging scientific
information and keeping abreast of DNA analysis methods and technology.
REQUIREMENTS: The position requires (1) a bachelor’s
degree, preferably supplemented by a Master’s degree, with emphasis on course
work in one of the biological, natural, physical or forensic science related
disciplines; (2) successful completion of a minimum of 12 semester hours of
course work in the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics, molecular
biology/cell biology; (3) a minimum of three years of forensic DNA laboratory
experience; (4) considerable knowledge of PCR, STR, capillary electrophoresis
and the use of computer software and other instrumentation associated with DNA
analysis; (5) considerable knowledge of statistics and population genetics as
it applies to forensic DNA analysis; (6) considerable knowledge of DNA Advisory
Board (DAB), ISO 17025 and ASCLD/LAB criteria; laboratory safety and quality
assurance procedures; (7) court qualification as a DNA analyst; and (8)
knowledge and/or experience of CODIS is preferred.
