POSITION:     DNA TECHNICAL LEADER

LOCATION:  Greenville, SC

Greenville County is currently accepting applications for a DNA Technical Leader for its brand new, state-of-the-art crime laboratory.

 

Greenville County is located in northwestern South Carolina between Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC, one hour from the mountains and three hours from the beach. SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

The successful candidate will be required to perform the duties of a DNA Technical Leader, as defined by the DAB Guidelines.  This position will be responsible for creating and maintaining required ASCLD/LAB accreditations, as well as Quality Assurance Standards (QAS) for Forensic DNA Laboratories. 

 

Performs administrative duties and supervises the operation and development of the Crime Laboratory, including personnel and equipment.  With limited supervision, conducts physical, microscopic, immunological, and biochemical analyses on evidence submitted and provides written reports based on the analyst’s interpretation of results.  Provides expert testimony in federal, state, and local courts.  Conducts training to appropriate individuals or groups.  

 

Additional responsibilities include conducting analyses and examining tissue and body fluids to detect the presence of blood, semen, and other stains; conducting DNA typing testing on human tissue to compare criminal evidence and samples of known origin; evaluating, interpreting, and documenting the DNA tests conducted and testifying in court as to the laboratory findings; reviewing work of other analysts; performing proficiency tests and other quality assurance duties; participating in continuing education programs; collecting, documenting, and preserving evidence; and, maintaining laboratory instruments.  

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must possess an earned Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution; or the equivalent in a biological, chemical or forensic science with earned credits in genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology or other subjects which provide a basic understanding of the foundation of forensic DNA analysis, as well as statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis.  As per the DAB (DNA Advisory Board) Guidelines and the FBI Quality Assurance Standards a DNA Technical Leader of a laboratory must have a minimum of three years of forensic DNA laboratory experience. Two (2) years supervisory experience in a Crime Laboratory is also preferred.

 

Applicants must have exceptional communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to generate and explain detailed scientific reports.  The successful candidate is not directly tasked with arrest functions but may be required to obtain law enforcement certification as determined by the Assistant County Administrator for the Department of Public Safety.  Other certificates and licenses may be required at the discretion of the Assistant County Administrator for the Department of Public Safety.  The following are considered highly desirable:  a) experience in Short Tandem Repeats (STR) analysis; knowledge of handling forensic evidence; knowledge of the principles and practices of quantitative/qualitative organic chemistry; experience working with forensic DNA using capillary electrophoresis, knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and procedures, experience as an ASCLD/LAB and/or with an ISO accredited institution.
